The Centre
Establishment and objectives
The Centre for Innovation, Intellectual Property and Competition, CIIPC, was set up in 2015 with the aim of supporting academic and policy oriented dialogue in the individual and intersectional areas of innovation, intellectual property and competition.
Since its inception, CIIPC has undertaken research on contemporary issues in these areas. Its research projects cover both niche areas and questions relating to extensively discussed areas of law and policy.
A key feature of the Centre is its emphasis on empirical and interdisciplinary approaches to research. These approaches are intended to provide holistic insights into issues relating to innovation, intellectual property and competition.
Areas of research
CIIPC has undertaken projects in diverse areas, including open science, open innovation, the relationship between intellectual property and startups, the interface between patents and competition law, and working requirements of patents.
The Centre is also involved in developing open access textbooks on intellectual property and competition law.
Although its focus is largely on science and technology related issues, CIIPC also contributes to research in non technology driven areas such as trademarks and geographical indications.
The Centre works alongside the IPR Chair at National Law University Delhi, and many of its events and internships are run jointly as CIIPC–IPR Chair.
What the Centre claims
Written the way a patent claims an invention: one independent claim, and the claims that rest on it.
- 1
A centre for the study of ideas, set up at National Law University Delhi in 2015, comprising:
- research into how the law rewards invention;
- research into how the law keeps markets open; and
- academic and policy-oriented dialogue on where the two meet,
wherein each is studied in its own right and at its intersection with the others.
- 2
The centre of claim 1, wherein the research is empirical and interdisciplinary.
- 3
The centre of claim 1, wherein its attention, while largely on science and technology, extends to trade marks and geographical indications.
- 4
The centre of claim 2, wherein what it learns is made open, including open-access textbooks on intellectual property and on competition law.
- 5
The centre of any preceding claim, wherein no grant is accepted on conditions that may influence its research freedom or academic independence.
- 6
The centre of claim 5, wherein the support it receives is disclosed in the work it supports.

The website

Design and development
Yug Nema
This website was designed and developed by Yug Nema. Its idea comes from letters patent, the open letters that once announced a grant to anyone who read them, under seal: so the Centre’s work is set like a law report and drawn like a patent sheet, and what the Centre says in its own voice carries its seal.
Corrections and suggestions about the site are welcome at ciipc@nludelhi.ac.in.
