Headnote

The seventh annual workshop for teachers of intellectual property, this year on academic writing.

0001On 24th March 2018, the Centre for Innovation, Intellectual Property and Competition, CIIPC, in association with the National Academy of Law Teaching, organised the VII Annual IP Teaching Workshop 2018 at National Law University Delhi.

0002The workshop brought together a select group of intellectual property teachers and scholars from different parts of India. The seventh edition of the workshop focused on academic writing.

Background

0003The annual IP teaching workshops began as a joint programme with the University of Washington School of Law, Seattle. The first workshop in 2012 identified broad challenges faced by teachers of intellectual property law in India. Subsequent editions addressed IP teaching techniques, the use of information and communications technology in teaching, research and publication, IP clinics, curriculum development, empirical research, IP policy, and the relationship between IP and other branches of law.

0004The sixth IP teaching workshop in 2017 was organised in Bengaluru in association with the Centre for IP Rights and Advocacy at the National Law School of India University.

Focus of the 2018 Workshop

0005The 2018 workshop focused on academic writing. Early and mid level faculty members and PhD candidates with teaching or research interests in intellectual property were invited to participate by submitting a research proposal and curriculum vitae.

0006The proposals were expected to set out the research topic, context and background, research objectives and questions, importance of the research, research methods, references, and a proposed timeline for completing the research.

0007CIIPC encouraged proposals involving empirical techniques, political economy, social science methods, doctrinal research, and interdisciplinary areas of law and public policy.

Proceedings

0008The workshop began with an introductory speech by Mr. Yogesh Pai, Co Director of CIIPC. The Guest of Honour, Prof. Dr. B. T. Kaul, Chairperson of the Delhi Judicial Academy, addressed the gathering. This was followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Arul George Scaria, Co Director of CIIPC.

0009The workshop consisted of seven sessions chaired by eminent resource persons in the field of intellectual property law. Participants were given an opportunity to present their research proposals, followed by discussions and questions.

0010The discussions allowed participants to receive feedback from peers and experts on their proposed research. The feedback was intended to help participants reflect on their research and incorporate the suggestions while preparing their final papers.

Conclusion

0011The VII Annual IP Teaching Workshop 2018 provided a platform for IP teachers and scholars to present their research proposals and receive feedback from peers and experts. The workshop focused particularly on academic writing and the development of research proposals into papers of publishable quality.
