Headnote
For IP and competition law academics and regulators of the Asia Pacific, on using empirical methods in research and decision-making.
0001The Centre for Innovation, Intellectual Property and Competition, CIIPC, organised the First Asia Pacific Workshop on Empirical Methods in Innovation, Intellectual Property and Competition from 9th to 11th March 2017.
0002The workshop was open to legal academicians working in the areas of intellectual property law and competition law, as well as regulators dealing with intellectual property and competition law issues in the Asia Pacific region.
About the Workshop
0003The workshop focused on the use of empirical methods in research and decision making in the fields of innovation, intellectual property and competition. Its core objective was to help participants become more critical consumers of data in these areas.
0004The sessions provided an overview of empirical studies and methodological issues across different areas of intellectual property and competition law. The workshop was designed to help participants understand how data could be approached and used in their own research and decision making.
0005The sessions were conducted by legal experts and economists from different parts of the world with experience in empirical methods. The programme was also designed keeping in mind that many participants might have limited experience in economics, statistics and empirical methods.
Key Topics
0006The workshop covered a range of topics, including empirical evidence concerning innovation and intellectual property, empirical studies in patent law, copyright law and trademark law, and empirical studies on alternatives to intellectual property for innovation.
0007It also covered the relevance of a more economic approach in competition law, the role of data in assessing dynamic efficiency, economic and social sciences modelling, and the use of STATA for lawyers.
Participation and Financial Assistance
0008There was no registration fee for the workshop. CIIPC provided shared accommodation for participants from 8th to 12th March 2017, along with snacks, lunch and dinner during the workshop.
0009Participants were generally required to bear their own travel expenses, although CIIPC offered to cover travel costs for a limited number of candidates.
Conclusion
0010The First Asia Pacific Workshop provided a structured introduction to empirical methods for legal academicians and regulators working in intellectual property and competition law. It brought together legal and economic perspectives to help participants better understand empirical research, data and methodological approaches in these fields.
